Eco problems and solutions (just in case you haven't encountered them before!)

Problems:

Global warming – caused by increasing levels of CO2, methane, nitrates and other gasses in the atmosphere: Link

Pollution: in water, air, on the land and in the sea. Link   Link

Species of plants and animals are becoming extinct at an ever increasing rate. Link

Rain forest is disappearing at an ever increasing rate. Link

Land and sea is being degraded by overuse and over exploitation of resources. Link

All this leads to lower quality of life for humans and in extreme cases starvation and death! Link

ActionsGeneral:

Lower consumption - Link

Live more intelligent sustainable life styles - Link

Lower population levels - Link

Actions - Personal

Careful living:

Use less energy: - Link

Electricity: Turn appliances off at the wall, use low energy light bulbs, fill kettles with the quantity of water you are going to use.

Heating: Get your house insulated and draft proofed, wear jumpers and turn down your thermostat, hot water thermostat and don’t leave your taps running. Have showers instead of baths. Link

Re cycle: Food, plastic, metal, paper & card and glass - Link

Travel less: Cars, busses, planes and trains etc use energy and create CO2, walk or go by bike or public transport if you can, share your car  Link

Appliances: Buy things that last, fix them or get them fixed instead of buying new ones. Avoid electrical appliances you can do without (i.e. dry your washing in the sun instead of a drier), turn them off at the wall when you aren't using them. Give your old consumer items to a charity shop or ‘Freecycle’ them instead of throwing them away.  Use the local 'Lets' scheme if there is one - Link

Food: Grow your own food or buy locally grown organic food, compost your waste, eat less meat. - Link

Water: Collect your rainwater to water your plants, have showers not baths. Link

Actions - Government - Link

Move to renewable energy production. Link

Ensure that new houses are energy efficient and use materials that are eco friendly. Link

Subsidise the insulation and improvement of existing housing (including that owned by government & local councils!) Link

Change the planning laws to make it easier to install small scale local and domestic generation (such as combined heat and power plant and solar panels).  Link

Support farmers to grow in Britain crops that are imported at the moment. Support organic farming (produces less CO2 for most vegetables see this Soil Association report).

Do not support the change to biofuels (they increase the amount of CO2 going into the atmosphere instead of decreasing it and will lead to food shortages - click for more detail), unless they are made from waste products such as used chip oil or human sewage etc.
